For the majority of the crew, this was the first time they had competed in this major event, although the squad have been training very hard and competing through the autumn and winter months at other long-distance races around the country.

The very challenging ‘Tideway’ event, now in it’s 72nd year, is held over the Boat Race course, in the reverse direction, and with the same distance of 4 miles, 374 yards (or 6.8 Km) long. This year provided lots of opportunities for club crews to shine, especially with Olympic Trials keeping the national squad busy.

As the 286 crews took to the water along the length of the course to make their way to the start near Chiswick Bridge, light rain looked as though it might put a dampener on the day, but as the race got underway the skies began to clear andthe sun had come out by the time the second half of the event was underway.

Ironbridge women took part in the Intermediate 3 division of 114 crews, recording a very credible 54thposition with a time of 23:20.76.

During their race they had a boat-stopping moment when they hit a course marker buoy just after Hammersmith Bridge. Despite this, they quickly regained their composure and picked up the pace to catch a crew ahead of them, as well as passing three other crews overall.

The winners of the IM3 division were Cardiff University with a time of 21:10.76. The best time overall for the event was Thames Rowing Club with a time of 20.10.92.

Men, women and junior squads at Ironbridge Rowing Club are now setting their sights on the last event of the club’s head season at Northwich at the beginning of April, as well as preparing for the regatta season later this year.
